Sarah Hackney is a proud member of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes and holds the esteemed position of Secretary for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Chata. Her dedication to this cause is deeply personal, fueled by her love for her children and her unwavering commitment to her community.
Sarah's journey in advocacy began long before her formal roles. Growing up immersed in the rich cultural heritage of the Choctaw and Chickasaw people, she developed a profound understanding of the challenges facing Indigenous communities and a fierce determination to effect positive change. In addition to her professional responsibilities, Sarah's compassion extends to the well-being of all living beings. She devotes her spare time to rescuing and caring for animals in need, embodying her belief in justice and empathy for all creatures.
Sarah's impact in advocacy is significant. She played a pivotal role in spearheading "Wash Away the Silence," a powerful initiative aimed at shedding light on the MMIW crisis and domestic violence. Furthermore, she organized a coat drive to aid vulnerable individuals during harsh winters and used her platform to educate about the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) at the Oklahoma Capitol, where she shared an original poem by Jimmy Hackney. Additionally, Sarah obtained CLEET (Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training) certification for MMIW Chata's police training, ensuring that law enforcement officers receive proper training to address the unique challenges of missing and murdered Indigenous women cases.
As Secretary for MMIW Chata, Sarah is a relentless advocate for justice. She collaborates closely with tribal leaders, law enforcement agencies, and government officials to amplify the voices of Indigenous women and their families.
